Iron Ore in India

India produced 144mt of iron ore in 2012 contributing about five percent of global iron ore production. The country's iron ore reserves are estimated at 8.1bt containing 5.2bt iron.

Six Indian states including Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa account for over 95% of the country's total iron ore reserves. India's biggest iron ore producing state is Orissa, followed by Karnataka and Chhattisgarh. State-controlled National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is the biggest iron ore producing company in India.

St Mary’s Islands Karnataka

St Mary’s is a set of four small islands in India. Quite similarly to Giant’s Causeway in Ireland, these islands are famous for their basaltic rock formations cut into a peculiar hexagonal shape. The rocky beach and clear blue water make these islands a must visit. This island in India is still unknown to a large number of people.

Best time to visit: December – January

How to reach: Only way to reach this island is to take a boat from Malpe, Karnataka. The ride is roughly 15 mins and costs about Rs 500 for a round trip.

Places to see: Coconut gardens and basaltic rock formations

Where to stay: Unfortunately there are no accommodation facilities on this empty island in India. However, you can make your arrangements on the Malpe, nothing like it.

Things to do: A few selfies and group pictures on this extraordinary rock formations are requisite

Tip: Carry your own food and beverage since there is no refreshment facility available on the islands.

Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace, also known as Mysore Maharaja Palace is one among the largest palaces in India. It is situated in the city’s center. The palace was built in the year 1897 using wood, which was damaged due to fire. It was later reconstructed in the year 1912. The architecture is a blend of Hindu, Islam, Gothic and Rajput styles. The stunning interior is a display of intricate craftsmanship. While it is a feast to your eyes during daytime, you will be completely mesmerized by the sight of the palace illuminated by over 98000 bulbs in the night.

Badami Cave Temples

The first ruler of the Early Chalukya dynasty, Pulakesi I established a new capital for his kingdom sometime around 540 AD. This city was located at the mouth of steep ravine and initially was named Vatapi. Nowadays it is known as Badami.

Great kingdom needed outstanding sanctuaries. Badami Chalukyas built Badami Cave Temples – some of the most exquisite Indian rock-cut temples. The water flowing from the ravine in Badami is gathered in an ancient artificial lake – Agastya tirtha reservoir. Shivanasamudra Waterfalls

Shivanasamudra Waterfalls is located 85 kms away from Mysore. Shivanasamudra is an island town that divides River Cauvery into two falls. The two falls are named Gaganachukki Falls and Bharachukki Falls. Rated among the top 100 waterfalls all over the world, these falls offer spectacular view. Yet another specialty of Shivanasamudra is that it houses Asia’s first Hydroelectric Power Station.

Brindavan Gardens

Brindavan Gardens is situated below Krishnaraja Sagar dam. The work to construct the garden commenced in 1927 and it was completed in the year 1932. It is spread across 150 acres of land and it is one of the best gardens in the country. It houses a botanical park and many fountains in various shapes and sizes. The musical fountain is one of its main attractions. To enjoy the colorful fountains, the ideal time of visit would be after sunset.
